BUMC Preschool Program

Bethesda Preschool uses the Playtasks curriculum developed by Helen Evans. The premise of the program is that childern learn as they play - from manipulating educational materials to interacting with other childern and adults. The program emphasizes learning letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and other concepts through centers and individulaized instruction.

Field trips to such places as the local fire stations, grocery stores, a working farm, and the pumpkin patch add variety to the program. In addition, cooking once a week and learning to use a computer are favorate activities for our childern. Activities and special events include speech and hearing screenings, professional performers, seasonal programs, and scheduled parent-teacher conferences.

Opportunities for experiencing art, music, language development, social and natural sciences and outside play are also an important part of the overall program. Movement and Music sessions are an enjoyable event of the week for all of our classes. Spanish classes are part of our four- and five-year-old curriculums. Two-, three- and four-day classes are available, depending on the child's age. An optional extended day program is offered until 2:00 four-days a week. During this time children enjoy eating lunch together, story time, movies and playing on the playground.

Bethesda Preschool is staffed by highly qualified teachers who have many years experience in quality preschool education. The school utilizes team-teaching which allows each teacher to concentrate on his/her special fields of interest.

Parental involvement is welcomed in the classroom. All parents are encouraged to share their special skills, which might include reading a story, cooking a favorite recipe, helping with an art project, sewing or sharing a hobby. Parents in the classroom are an exciting addition to the educational process.
